A board-certified orthodontist is a dentist who has completed a graduate program in dentistry, receiving their DMD or DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine), and has also completed a competitive residency at a CODA-accredited orthodontic program for 2-3 years to be trained in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics.
This certification is a voluntary credential earned through the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO). The ABO is the most prestigious specialty board in the field of dentistry and is the only board that is recognized by the American Association of Orthodontists and the American Dental Association. This credential represents an orthodontist’s personal and public commitment to the standards of lifelong learning and specialty practice.
To earn this certification, the orthodontist must complete peer-developed and externally validated clinical and written examines. The certification is a three-part process with oral testing, written testing, and oral defense given in front of a panel of examiners. This certification takes significant expertise and effort to achieve and requires the orthodontist to demonstrate accomplishment over a broad range of patient problems.
