When it comes to orthodontic treatment, today you have an array of options to choose from. What is the best path for you? Here we’ll review two of the more discreet options available and what they entail.

Lingual Braces

Invisalign Pittsburgh

Lingual braces are attached to the inside of your teeth instead of the outside. Just like traditional braces, lingual braces consist of brackets and wires.

Keep in mind that not all individuals qualify for lingual braces. For instance, if you have an overbite, the brackets placed on the back of the teeth may not work for you.

If you do qualify for lingual braces, they are a popular choice for candidates. The tricky part:

  • Harder to clean your teeth
  • Difficulty with speech—at first—because the tongue can’t hit the back of your teeth to make sounds
  • Tongue sores or sensitivity from brushing against the brackets

The upside:

You will adapt! With a little patience, your speech will improve as you adjust. Your tongue will heal and toughen up. You will get better at cleaning around the brackets, just like you would have the same learning curve with traditional braces.

Invisalign Aligners

Invisalign aligners are removable trays similar to a retainer. There are no metal brackets or wires needed, and nothing is permanently fixed to your teeth as they are with traditional braces or lingual braces. What does this mean for you? The upside is:

  • Easily remove the aligners to eat, drink, brush and floss
  • No dietary restrictions in terms of crunchy, hard, or sticky foods
  • Fewer trips to the office

The challenges? Because you can remove them, you may be tempted to do so. Do not! Follow the treatment plan precisely if you want the desired result. You’ll still have speech impediments in the beginning, as you would with any orthodontic treatment. You may be able to eat or drink whatever you want, but you still must be diligent about brushing your teeth immediately after so that the lingering sugars do not stay pressed up against your teeth.

How Invisalign works

Using 3D technology, we will custom make aligners for you. You will wear them 20-22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, drink, floss and brush. Every two weeks you will change to a new set of aligners. Your teeth will gradually shift into better alignment over the course of treatment.
